| Changing from Oil-based paint to Acrylic paint on Doors | Frequently Given Answers |
|---|
I have some doors that have been painted with enamel paint in the past. I
would like to change the surface to something less shiny and brittle.
Do you have a primer that I can use on the enamel so that my new (latex
based) surface coat will stick?
Thank you very much!

I would consider sanding with 80G then 100G on any areas where paint is flaking off. I would then final sand the entire door with around 120g sandsponge to dull the surface. 3X
abrasives have exceptional resistance to clogging and gumming
when sanding painted surfaces.
Remove
dust, wipe down with denatured alcohol, let dry, then prime with Coronado 116-11. If
the surface is extremely hard and glossy, consider Insl-x Styx SXA-100.
Finish coat with 2 coats of a premium top line exterior Acrylic
from Coronado
or Benjamin Moore in the sheen of your choice.
Paint Choices
The acrylic products do dry quickly, so paint in the cool shade or under
cover, and lightly wipe the door with a slightly water damp (not dripping)
rag just prior to priming.
See Video: Painting Paneled Door
The acrylic will protect the door much better, and retain gloss and color much longer.
Be
aware that the remaining oil paint underneath will still have the potential
to crack
off in the future, as it never stops hardening.
